When I think of bad design, two industries come to mind: greeting cards and pharmaceutical advertising. Greeting cards can be extremely well executed design-wise, however many holidays fall prey to schmaltz, like the example below.
Bad design is also present in pharmaceutical advertising, but they have more of an excuse. They have to convey so much information that it often detracts from the clear message. Plus, they often deal with uncomfortable situations and either end up creating something impersonal (with blacked out images) or cheesy to cope with the embarrassment.
