Color and Emotions

As I was researching I found the following:

"Every single cell in our bodies need light energy in order to grow and survive. Color energies therefore affect our whole body."

A few ways to bring more color into your life are to:

  • Paint your walls vibrant colors
  • Eat brightly skinned organic fruits and vegetables
  • Decorate your home with items in complementing color contrasts
  • Colored light bulbs are great alternative to boring yellow light
  • Dress in shades of color that rule the day
  • Be vigilant about the colors around you, such as green grass and the blue sky.

This is a chart that further explains what we talked about in class last week with color and emotions. Today my day started off as a nice (brownish) yellow for joy - it then progressed to the medium red of annoyance.

Sorry I cant be at class - I am a bit annoyed about it.

Color. There's lots of it. Unless you have a black and white camera. Then you just have gradients.

Okay, so I'll start things off with a bang...
Both typographically stimulating and almost an overabundance of color. But the creator chose the color of text and background to make sure important words stood out and not-so-important words fall to the background.
I like the quote too... :)

Peacock feather!! If we're talkin' color-- this is probably one of the most colorful birds i know of. This macro-photo gets all up in there for a great look at the multitude of colors.
This is from http://www.caedes.net/ a great website where people post both computer creations and photographic work for sharing or commenting.
Plus, it's GREAT for backgrounds for your computer!

I like this one, (also from caedes.net) because of the color and texture.

This one I enjoy because of the green/brown play. You also get great highlights from the water droplets.

Color in my own real life

My dining room when we moved in.

My dining room now, painted but not finished yet :)

Sun room - before

Sun room - after (furniture arriving on Thursday, yay!)

As well as not being a fan of the particular colors of these rooms when we moved in, I was going for a certain vibe and style with each one. I feel that dining rooms should always be about drama, so it's okay to go a little darker with the paint color than you would in any other room, hence one of my favorite colors - dark brown! Also I love this color with the even darker wood table and chairs and the juxtaposition of the white trim. In the sun room there was this weird yellow-green color and next to the yellow of the dining room and kitchen it looked dingy and gross, so I went with a more relaxing color of blue/green. It's great for a room with so many windows that is designed to be a chill spot. It gives in a bit of a tropical feel, especially when matched with the white trim again.

Global Furniture Stores

Like predicted, I changed topics...

IKEA!

Aside from competitors listed by others I found a few worth noting.

They have a whole furniture store as well as the department stores, so not all in one place but still the same variety

weighing the competition...

Ahh, competition... whether it's the other baseball player who can hit farther than you can, or the bake sale lady who has 'secret ingredient' muffins, everyone has competition. I haven't decided who to choose for my logo yet-- so I looked at the competitors of IKEA and the London Olympics 2012 to see if it raised the competitive hackles in me and made my choice for me...

IKEA - is kind of rare in how one-off it can be to try to group with like stores. Not quite a department store, not quite a warehouse department.

Not quite the same, but discount and some items require contstruction on your part. But very "mainstream"

CB2.com - online only store, part of the Crate&Barrel family. A little more intricate/unique like IKEA.

London 2012 Olympics -- looked at other international and (mostly) national sports championships.

1948 London Olympics - Second time London hosted the Olympics. First time in 12 years because of World War II.

1908 London Olympics - First time London hosted the Olympics. Hurriedly put together because original host city was deemed to not be on schedule to be ready in time. London's infrastructure was there and the took over as host city.

I like this one. FIFA '10! Might get a little muddy if it goes B&W, but in color it looks awesome.

Bad Logos - Good Laugh

Imagine you have your business cards, your letterhead and your signage all completed and then you discover that your logo is not quite sending the correct message for your business.

Here is a logo that I thought was good - it explains what the company does.
Cute idea!
